A young Strathmore entrepreneur is growing her business by leaps and bounds, expanding her services and doubling her staff in less than a year.

A Community Futures Youth Business Loan has propelled one young woman all the way to entrepreneurial success..

Company: NV Hair Studio and Day Spa Ltd.
Location: Strathmore, Alberta

Owner: Kyla Anderson

Even at her young age, Kyla Anderson was sure that she wanted to run her own business – all she needed to do was figure out how to get started. In March 2007 she turned to Community Futures Wild Rose for help.

“I went to Community Futures for advice on what types of steps I had to take at getting started with my business,” she says. “They also helped me with the steps needed to receive a small business loan for my start-up costs.” Because of her age, Kyla qualified for a Community Futures Youth Business Loan, which is available to entrepreneurs age 18 to 29. Kyla also participated in a series of workshops that took her through the many aspects of starting a business.

NV Hair Studio and Day Spa opened in May 2007, offering all hair salon services and waxing. Within six months the clientele was more than the space could handle, and Kyla expanded into the bay next door. At that time she also increased her staff from 3 people to 7. She is now operating a full service hair and nail enhancement salon, a tanning studio, and offering all waxing services. The business employs 14 people.

Kyla’s plans for the future include adding an Advanced Cutting Academy to the salon in order to provide job placement for future hairstylists and encourage further education. Clearly Kyla is committed not just to running a business, but to enhancing opportunity in the beauty industry for everyone in her community.
